I go to meetings of the San Francisco Orchid Society and Sonoma County Orchid Society and I'll bring plants for you to see. Pictures on these pages are photos I have taken myself and are almost all of that particular plant's bloom, or of a division of that plant.
- Aerangis contains about 50 species spread through Africa, Madagascar and the Comoros Islands.
- Anacheilium contains 59 species growing from Mexico through northern South America. These are the cockleshell orchids. They were separated from Encyclia for technical reasons.
- Angraecum contains 200 species grow in tropical Africa to Madagascar. They like a wood slat basket, high humidity, moderate shade, and ample water while in growing.
- Anguloa contains 10 terrestrial species in northern South America. They need a short dry rest.
- Ascocenda (Ascda) is Ascocentrum x Vanda
- Baptistonia grows in Brazil and now contains only one species. All the others have been moved back to Oncidium.
- Bifrenaria is 30 small epiphytes or often terrestrials from South America. Partial shade and wet humid conditions especially while growing.
- Bollea contains 11 species in Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador. They have no pseudobulbs. They like high humidity and good air circulation. They should be watered and fed well while in growth.

- Brassada (Brsa) is Ada x Brassia
- Brassia contains 29 species spread throughout tropical America. They are very prone to pleating if not watered enough during growth spurts.
- Brassolaelia (Bl) is Brassavola x Laelia
- Brassolaeliocattleya (Blc) is Brassavola x Laelia x Cattleya
- Bulbophyllum contains 1500 species found in all tropical areas on earth.
- Cattleya contains 53 species from tropical South America. They do best in a medium that has good drainage and dry between watering. Give them a sort dryer rest after blooming.
- Cirrhopetalum contains 150 species growing in Asia east of India on to the Pacific islands. Separated from Bulbophylum. Grow in wood basket.
- Clowesia contains 6 deciduous, fragrant plants growing from Mexico to northern South America.
- Cochleanthes contains 10 species spread through tropical America They need a shady and humid environment.
- Coelogyne contains 100 species found in all of Asia east of India and Indonesia and Fiji. Conditions vary considerably.
- Colmanara (Colm) is Miltonia x Odontoglossum x Oncidium
- Cymbidiella contains 3 species from Madagascar. They need constant hot, humid conditions with lots of water year round and good drainage similar to growing a Phaius. Here is an interesting article about Cymbidiella.
- Cymbidium contains more than 40 species growing throughout Asia and the Pacific Islands.
- Cyrtochilum contains 50 species of terrestrials separated from Oncidium for technical reasons. They grow at high elevations in the Andes from Venezuela, Colombia and south to Ecuador and Peru. Keep cool and moist.
- Darwinara (Dar) is Ascocentrum x Neofinetia x Rhynchostylis x Vanda
- Degarmoara (Dgmra) is Brassia x Miltonia x Odontoglossum
- Dendrobium contains 1200 species from all parts of Asia and the Pacific. Some like a dry winter rest, all like to dry out between watering. Flowers are long lasting.
- Dendrochilum contains 150 species from Burma to the Philippines. Water well. Hates to have the roots disturbed and takes a year to recover from re-potting.
- Dialaeliocattleya (Cattleya) is Diacrium x Laelia
- Diplocaulobium contains 100 species of small plants in Malaysia, Australia and the Philippines.
- Dracula contains 100 species that spread through the Andes. Cool to cold growers, Need to be kept in moist humid conditions with lower light.
- Dryadella contains a group of 33 species separated from Masdevallia. grows from Guatemala to Brazil.
- Encyclia contains 240 species that throughout all of tropical America and the West Indies. Intermediate conditions, long dry winter rest.
- Epicattleya (Epc) is Cattleya x Epidendrum
- Epidendrum contains 1000 known species through out tropical Americas and the Caribbean. Extremely varied.
- Epigeneium contains 35 species in Southeast Asia and the Philippines. They do well mounted and given warm, humid and shady conditions.
- Euchile contains 2 species from Mexico. They used to be Encyclia but were removed for technical reasons. Definitely need a dry winter rest.
- Gongora contains 52 species from Mexico to Bolivia and Brazil at low altitudes. These plants have mostly pendant flowers. Water and fertilize regularly.
- Helcia contains 3 species from Colombia and Ecuador that are related to Trichopilia. Needs lots of water while growing but also a month's rest after blooming.
- Hyalosema contains Pretty much just the one species, Hyalosema grandiflorum. Everything else has been transferred to Bulbophyllum. Hot growing, fragrant.
- Kefersteinia contains 36 species growing in low, tropical forests. Should not be allowed to dry out.
- Laelia About 60 species from Mexico through South America. They are highly varied.
- Laeliocattleya (Lc) is Laelia x Cattleya
- Lanium Contains less than 5 species found in northern South America. Grow best mounted on tree fern or cork.
- Leptotes has six species that grow in Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. They are small sticklike plants that carry large flowers
- Liparis contains 250 mostly terrestrial species found in wet mountain forests up to 10,000 feet. They are widespread in both temperate and tropical areas.
- Lockhartia contains 25 species spread throughout tropical America. They grow in intermediate conditions with even watering and fertilizer while growing and less in the autumn.
- Lycaste contains 52 species of epiphytes, lithophytes and terrestrials growing throughout the West Indies, Central America, Peru and Bolivia.
- Masdevallia contains 350 species and are found from southern Mexico to the southern Andes. They are cold to cool growing and can be in a seedling mix or sphagnum. Almost impossible to over-water.
- Maxillaria contains 650 some species spread throughout the tropical and sub-tropical Americas. They have a single flower. Generally warm to hot growing.
- Miltonia contains 10 species from Brazil and Peru. They grow in bright warm conditions.
- Mormodes contains 70 species growing from Mexico and eastern South America. Grow in low altitude tropical forest.
- Mormolyca comtains 6 small species growing in Central America and northern South America.
- Myoxanthus contains 40 species of small to large Pleurothallis-like plants. They do well mounted.
- Neofinetia contains 3 species from Japan, Korea and the Ryukyu Islands.
- Odontocidium (Odcdm) is Odontoglossum x Oncidium
- Oncidium contains 600 species from throughout Central America and South America. They grow in a wide variety of environments. If you know a little about where the species grows, the do very well in cultivation.

- Ornithophora contains 1 species from Brazil. Flower is shaped like a bird if seen from the side.
- Panarica contains 6 species growing in Panama and Costa Rica. These were separated from Encyclia for technical reasons. Dry winter rest, good watering during the growing season.
- Paphiopedilum contains 100 species in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. They have no pseudobulb so need moderate shade, good humidity and regular year round watering with good air circulation. They are generally slow growing. Leaves indicate prefered temperature with those that are mottled grow warmer, and the solid green with only one flower grow intermediate to cool.
- Pescatorea contains 12 species from Costa Rica to Ecuador and Colombia. They are bulbless epiphytes with fan shape leaves growing in extremely wet cloud forests at the base of trees.
- Pholidota contains 30 species growing from India to South China, Malaysia, Indonesia, New Guinea into the Pacific Islands and south to Australia.
- Phragmipedium contains about 30 species growing in Central and most of South America.
- Pleurothallis contains More than 1000 species growing in all parts of the subtropical and tropical Americas. There are very diverse plant forms and culture requirements from moss-like plants to large ranging plants of several feet in height.
- Polystachya contains more than 130 species from pretty much all over the tropical parts of the world. Flowers open downward but there are several flowers on a spike.

- Rehfieldara (Rfda) is Ada x Odontoglossum x Oncidium
- Renanthera contains about 15 species from Southeast Asia to the Philippines.
- Restrepia contains 30 or 40 found from Mexico to Northern Argentina. Their culture is similar to small Pleurothallis species and grow well with small pots, high humidity and shady conditions.

- Rhynchosophrocattleya (Rsc) is Rhyncholaelia x Sophronitis x Cattleya
- Rodriguezia contains about 30 species mostly found in Brazil.
- Scaphosepalum contains 14 species found in mossy cloud forests from Guatemala to Peru. They are similar to Masdevallia.

- Sophrolaeliocattleya (Slc) is Cattleya x Laelia x Sophronitis
- Stanhopea contains 55 species growing from Mexico, through Central America and South America.
- Trichoceros contains 5 species growing in the Andes from Colombia to Bolivia with flowers that resemble insects.
- Vanda contains 70 species from all over Asia and Southeast Asia.
- Vuylstekeara (Vuyl) is Cochlioda x Miltonia x Odontoglossum
- Zootrophion contains 11 species growing in Central America, Jamaica and South America. They have no psuedobulbs. They like shady, humid conditions, even watering and a well draining medium or mounted.

- Zygopetalum contains 40 species are spread through Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, Bolivia and Peru. They like a humid, semi-shady environment.
