Breathing in brings energy, breathing out relieves tension. It reinforces the stretching and facilitates the looking inward. The techniques allow some measure of control, or at least awareness, of the flow of energy in and around the body. The science of breathing is called pranayama.
Breathing is something that occurs to me naturally. I am breathing even when I are not aware of it. Yet, my breathing becomes modified and restricted in various ways. I developed unhealthy breathing habits without being aware of it. I tended to assume positions that diminished lung capacities and take shortened breaths.
There is a strong connection between my breathing and my mental state. Therefore, focus on the breath is important.
